Spain produced one of their strongest knockout-stage performances at the 2026 World Cup, defeating Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 to advance confidently to the last 16 and send a clear warning that they have entered the decisive stage of the tournament with greater sharpness and aggression.
The Spanish victory came through a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a goal from Pedro Porro, in a match where Spain controlled the rhythm and imposed their attacking style from the first half. The Guardian reported that the win gave Spain their first victory in a World Cup knockout match since winning the title in 2010, while also noting that the team kept a clean sheet for the fourth consecutive match.
Spain started with clear pressure and had an early goal by Marc Cucurella ruled out before Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 36th minute. In the second half, Pedro Porro doubled the lead in the 66th minute, before Oyarzabal returned to seal the result with a third goal in the 89th minute, according to Al Jazeera Sports’ match coverage, which confirmed Spain’s 3-0 win.
The result reflects more than just Spain’s qualification. It sends a strong message to the rest of the contenders: this Spanish team is no longer relying only on possession, but is now showing a greater ability to turn control into goals. Austria’s exit came after a match in which they struggled to match Spain’s speed on the flanks and movement between the lines.
With this win, Spain now await the winner of the Portugal vs Croatia match in the Round of 16, setting up what could become one of the strongest fixtures of the next stage if the second side is confirmed as another major football name.
