Ottawa hosted a notable Arab cultural evening presented by Music Without Borders under the title “A Tribute to Baligh Hamdi,” bringing together members of the Arab diplomatic corps, community leaders, and guests from across the Arab Canadian community.
The event was attended by Saudi Ambassador Amal Al Mualimi, Ambassador Sabah Al Rafie, Yemeni Ambassador and Dean of the Arab Diplomatic Corps جمال السلال, Tunisian Ambassador Lassaad Boutara, a representative of the Qatari Embassy, Lebanese Consul Mr. Ali Dirany, and Senator Mohammad Al Zaibak.
The strong diplomatic presence gave the evening a wider cultural and community dimension, transforming the concert into more than a musical gathering. The event became a meeting point between Arab artistic heritage and the Arab diaspora in Canada, reflecting the role of music in preserving identity and bringing communities together.
The concert celebrated the legacy of legendary Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi, whose melodies shaped generations of Arab music lovers and were performed by some of the Arab world’s most iconic singers, including Umm Kulthum, Warda, Abdel Halim Hafez, Sabah, and Wadih El Safi.
Baligh Hamdi is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern Arabic music for blending classical Arabic melodies with emotional simplicity and popular appeal. His songs continue to resonate across generations and remain deeply rooted in Arab cultural memory.
The evening also highlighted the role of Music Without Borders in promoting Arab arts and culture in Canada and strengthening cultural bridges between Arab communities abroad and their heritage through professionally produced artistic events.
