Halifax to Raise the Jordanian Flag for the First Time with Support from the Nashama Society

Halifax, Nova Scotia, is preparing to host a landmark Jordanian community event as the Jordanian flag is set to be raised in the city for the first time in celebration of the 80th Independence Day of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at Grand Parade in downtown Halifax. The event will be attended by Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore, along with senior officials, members of the municipal council, and community representatives.
The milestone comes after dedicated efforts led by Nuthaila Rihani, president of the Jordanian Canadian Nashama Society, also known as ملتقى النشامى للجالية الأردنية في كندا/هاليفاكس. Rihani worked to secure the official approval needed to hold the flag-raising ceremony, making the occasion a first of its kind for the Jordanian community in Nova Scotia.
For Jordanians in Halifax, the event carries strong symbolic meaning. It moves the celebration of Jordan’s independence from private community gatherings into a public civic space at the heart of the city, giving Jordanian identity a visible and official presence within Canadian public life.
The flag raising also reflects a wider community achievement. It is a message of pride in Jordan, while also expressing positive belonging to the Canadian society that has welcomed members of the community.
