Salah’s Final Message Sparks Tension Inside Liverpool

Mohamed Salah’s latest public message about Liverpool’s football identity has sparked a major debate in England, after the Egyptian star urged the club to return to the aggressive “heavy metal” attacking style associated with its most successful years under Jurgen Klopp.
Salah’s comments came after Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, a result that increased pressure on the team and head coach Arne Slot. The defeat left Liverpool fifth with 59 points, while Aston Villa moved into fourth with 62 points, putting Liverpool’s Champions League qualification hopes under pressure heading into the final round.
In a statement on social media, Salah said it was painful to watch Liverpool suffer another defeat this season and argued that the club’s supporters deserved better. He called for Liverpool to recover the attacking identity that once made opponents fear the team and brought trophies to Anfield. Reuters and the BBC reported the remarks as one of Salah’s strongest public assessments of Liverpool’s current state.
The message, however, triggered criticism from former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who questioned the timing of Salah’s comments. Neville said Salah had effectively “pulled the pin” on a grenade while preparing to leave the club, arguing that such a statement only adds pressure on Liverpool and their manager at a critical moment.
British media outlets interpreted Salah’s statement as more than a tactical opinion, with several reports viewing it as a thinly veiled criticism of Slot’s playing style. The Times reported that the post resonated strongly with frustrated supporters and added pressure around the club’s direction, while The Guardian noted that some Liverpool players interacted with the post, increasing the sense that the message had landed inside the dressing room as well as outside it.
The timing makes the controversy even more sensitive. Salah is expected to leave Liverpool at the end of the season after years in which he became one of the defining figures of the club’s modern era. For some supporters, his message sounded like an honest warning from a player who still cares deeply about the club. For others, it was a damaging intervention at the worst possible moment.
Between Neville’s criticism and the backing Salah received from parts of the Liverpool fan base, the statement has become one of the biggest talking points in English football, raising wider questions about Liverpool’s identity, Slot’s leadership, and the club’s future after Salah.
